FPV Questions
Q: “What does FPV stand for?”

FPV stands for First Person View. In our world, it means piloting a drone via a video feed transmitted directly from a camera on the drone to a pair of goggles strapped to your face. Unlike standard "camera drones" where you stare at a phone screen, FPV puts you inside the cockpit. It’s the closest thing to flying like a bird—or a fighter jet—without leaving the ground.

Q: “What is an FPV drone exactly?”

Think of it as a racing car for the sky. An FPV drone is usually a custom-built or pre-built quadcopter designed for speed, agility, and durability. Unlike a DJI Mavic that flies itself with GPS stabilization, FPV drones (especially in "Acro" mode) require full manual control. You are in complete command of every roll, flip, and dive. Whether it's a tiny "Whoop" for flying indoors or a powerful 5-inch rig for freestyle, it's pure adrenaline.

Q: “How fast are FPV drones?”

Hold onto your hat! While a beginner "Tiny Whoop" might cruise at 15-20 mph, a standard 5-inch freestyle drone (like the ones we fly) can easily hit 60-90 mph (100-140 km/h) in seconds. Dedicated racing drones? They can scream past 120 mph (200 km/h). The acceleration is instant—0 to 60 faster than most supercars.

Q: “What is the battery life of an FPV drone?”

This is the part that shocks beginners: FPV is intense, and so is the power draw. A typical flight on a 5-inch freestyle drone lasts about 3 to 5 minutes. Smaller Whoops might get 2-4 minutes. This is why we pilots don't just buy one battery; we buy "packs" in bulk. The goal isn't to stay up for 30 minutes; it's to fly 5 minutes of pure, heart-pounding intensity, land, swap the LiPo, and do it again.

Q: “What is ELRS FPV?”

ELRS (ExpressLRS) is the absolute game-changer in the radio control world. It is an open-source, high-performance link for your radio transmitter (controller). It offers incredible range and ultra-low latency, meaning your drone reacts instantly to your stick movements. Most of the drones and radios we sell (like RadioMaster) now come with ELRS as the standard because it's simply better, cheaper, and more reliable than older protocols like FrSky.

Q: “What prebuild quadcopter works with Walksnail digital FPV?”

We are huge fans of the high-definition visuals from Walksnail. If you're looking for a Bind-and-Fly (BNF) that comes with the Walksnail Avatar system pre-installed, brands like BetaFPV, GEPRC, and Axisflying have excellent options. Look for models labeled "Avatar" or "Walksnail HD" in our shop. The BetaFPV Pavo series (Cinewhoops) or the GEPRC Mark 5 are fantastic starting points that deliver that crisp 1080p feed right out of the box.

Q: “How far can FPV drones go?”

This depends heavily on your video system (VTX) and radio link. With a modern setup like ELRS and a good VTX (Video Transmitter), you can easily fly 1km to 5km (0.6 to 3 miles) in open areas. Long-range specialists can push 10km+, but for most freestyle pilots ripping a "bando" (abandoned building) or a park, 500 meters is plenty. Note: Always fly within your local regulations and maintain a visual line of sight where required!
